Why You Need a Well Water Tank

!: Why You Need a Well Water Tank

The function of a well water tank is simply to store water for use. The sizes of well water tanks vary depending on the purpose for which it is used. For example, if it is used for domestic purposes, it is most likely small. On the other hand, if it is used for industrial purposes, it will definitely be a huge tank with a great storage capacity.

Where Does This Water Come From?

As a matter of fact, the source of water that is stored is the well itself. The stored water is transferred from the well to the tank by a pump. The lifespan of the pump depends on the tank.

How Does Well Water Enter The Tank?

When water is transferred to the tank, air that is present above gets compressed. There is a nozzle inside which is connected to the tap. When the tap is opened, water is let out of the tank through the nozzle. The air pressure above forces this water out.

The pump will force more water to enter once the air has finished pushing all the water out of it. Well water tanks come in different sizes. But the standardized size is about forty gallons. The tank has an approximate capacity of 151.4 liters.

Some well water tanks have bladder inside them. They are called bladder pressure tanks. As water starts filling the bladder, the air inside the tank is trapped between the bladder and the tank wall. Thus the air inside gets compressed until the air pressure equalizes with the pressure of the incoming water.

Now, if the tap is turned on, the water from inside gushes out. Diaphragm well water tank functions in a similar way. The only difference is that the diaphragm of this tank is a permanent one and it can not be replaced.

The size of well water tanks varies. But, the larger the tank is, the longer will it last. It is recommended that you buy a tank whose capacity is double the capacity of the pump. Too many people don't follow this simple advice because larger tanks cost more, but most of the time this turns out to be a bad decision.

Certain things are to be kept in mind while installing a well water tank. It should not be placed anywhere that the water has a chance of freezing. That means you don't want to bury it, especially if you live in a climate that gets cold in the winter. The best place for keeping these tanks are basements, utility rooms etc.

Bottled Water Vs Full House Water Filtration

!: Bottled Water Vs Full House Water Filtration

When it comes to using healthy water, it is really a tossup between bottled water for drinking or full house water filtration these days. There are no two ways about it, our water companies have failed to protect us above what they call a minimum 'standard specifications for water treatment', and some do not even aspire to those. These standards in themselves vaguely allow for low contamination densities that are said to be harmless to your health. Of course, I will never understand how a bit of poison over a length of time is harmless to me and my children.

People used to think of distilled water as an alternative but even while it is the purest form of water available, distillation is a form of purification that can not differentiate between what is bad and what is good for us. So instead of just taking out the impurities, the minerals essential for human well being are distilled out of the water too. It does not taste the same as natural water, or the water you would get through a house water filtration system, and it is actually harmful to your body.

Even the more prevalent option, the so-called 'pure' bottled water is not certifiably 'pure'. There is no standard set to control the purification of bottled water, and thus while some companies may be responsible enough to not cheat you, the others can legally sell you water that is not cleaner than tap water itself. Just think, they have been allowed to sell us carbonated drinks for years and years with no government doing anything about it to protect the public from its adverse affects on health, who do you think will stand to protect us if the water wasn't cleaner than what we already had to drink. They joke about it as a status symbol; bottled water is nothing other than that and a constant expenditure as well as a persistent pollutant to our atmosphere, increasing the amount of plastic in our environment every few seconds...with each purchase.

In such a situation, if you turn to the option of whole house water filtration, for your sake and that of your family, no one can blame you for wanting to be sure your money isn't going into a bottomless pit. In contrast to bottled water, a filter is a long term purchase that needs periodic maintenance and you actually know your water is safe. And your conscience can be at ease, you are not turning this green planet into a plastic world. That, perhaps, is something to share with your friends; Go Green, drink filtered water you can regularize yourself, not scam tap water labeled for its fake purity.

Submersible Pumps

!: Submersible Pumps

A submersible pump is one that has a sealed motor, fitted in a pump body. The total assembly is immersed in the fluid that needs to be pumped. The main advantage of this type of pump is that it can offer a considerable amount of lifting power, as it does not rely on external air pressure.

A submersible pump has a system of mechanical seals that is used to prevent the fluid being pumped from entering the motor, resulting in a short circuit. A pump can either be attached to a pipe or a flexible hose.

Some of the types of submersible pumps are bladder pumps, bilge and ballast pumps, borehole pumps, booster pumps, and centrifugal pumps. Other examples are condensate pumps, dewatering pumps, fountain pumps, grinder pumps, micro pumps, sampling pumps, trash pumps, utility pumps, and well pumps. Some submersible pumps are manufactured for particular applications. These pumps are water submersible pumps, sewage submersible pumps, 12-volt submersible pumps, sand submersible pumps, irrigation submersible pumps, and solar submersible pumps. Solar submersible pumps have many uses and are suitable for slow and steady water transfer into a holding tank.

Submersible pumps are found in many appliances. Single stage pumps are utilized for drainage, sewage pumping, common industrial pumping, and slurry pumping. Multiple stage submersible pumps are normally used for water abstraction. These pumps can also be found in oil wells. Moreover, submersible pumps can be positioned directly in a pond and require comparatively little installation. These pumps are also relatively silent.

The four main specifications that should be considered while choosing a submersible pump are maximum expulsion flow, maximum discharge pressure, horsepower, and discharge size.

Earlier, the main drawback of submersible pumps was that its pump seal could rupture and release oil coolant into the water. However, newer pumps are magnet-driven, and no longer require a coolant. These magnet-driven pumps are more expensive, but they consume less electricity.

Guide to Using Sump Pumps

!: Guide to Using Sump Pumps

One of the essential problems that many households face after rainy seasons is the accumulation of water in the basement, not just stopping the inhabitants from entering the basement but also resulting in a pretty stinking smell. The solution comes in the form of a sump pit, a hole in the basement floor where the water can go down and stand. It is ideal to have the basement floor made in such a way that the slope is towards the sump pit, so that the water would go in there by itself.

If you let the water stand in the sump pit for long durations, it can grow algae and fetch debris too, and may also promote some other unhygienic problems. A pump is most often beneficial when draining water out of the sump pit. While rainwater standing in the basement is the major problem that a sump pump solves, it is also helpful if water accumulates in the sump pit because of any other suspect like a higher water table in the surroundings.

The pump sucks water and throws it away at the other end of the pipe. While dry wells or municipal storm drains are more ideal for dumping this dirty water, some old houses may have their pumps throwing water into the sewerage lines, which is commonly prohibited by law as this can negatively affect the sewerage system. Now let's see how sump pumps work and what types are available.

Normal homes keep their pumps on self-acting by connecting them with the main electrical supply. This is something you should do due to the possibility of water spilling out of the pit and flooding the basement. For this very reason, a backup power supply is arranged using batteries so that the pump will keep working even in Cases of electricity failure.

Sump pumps are available in two types: submersible and pedestal. Submersible sump pumps are shorter in height (around 12 inches) and are mounted into the lowest of the sump pits. Some of these pumps come with a floating electrical switch that is enclosed in plastic and floats above the water. When water enters the pit and the water level rises, the galvanic switch also goes up and automatically turns on when it comes to a specific height. In submersible pump systems, water is evacuated from the bottom; some of the sump pumps come with a top that covers them such that trash won't be able to get into and ruin the pump.

Pedestal sump pumps, on the other hand, are fitted on a pedestal and are commonly 30 inches high. A pipe goes all the way to the lowest of the sump pit and is linked to a motor placed above the pit. The same type of floating galvanic switch is used to turn on the pump; however, these get switched on before water comes closer to the motors as the motors are non waterproof and may get harmed if they come into palpate with water.
